Apartment Renting with Pets

It’s difficult to find landlords who will allow large dogs.
The smaller your dog is the easier it will be to find a place, although most apartments do not allow dogs at all. Most large dogs will not be happy in an apartment anyway, unless the owner takes the dog for a long walk every day. Most people aren’t committed to doing that. If you have a large dog, be prepared to look hard to find a place that will accept it. Some Wahpeton ND apartments allow dogs of all sizes.
2. Train your dog so it does not bark or whine when you aren’t home.
Make sure your dog gets enough exercise and training. Put the dog in a kennel if she can’t be trusted when left home alone. If your dog needs more exercise than you can provide, then hire a dog walker, pet sitter or take your dog to dog daycare on days you work long hours. These options are better than being evicted for a barking dog or paying for damages to your carpet, door and walls from a dog scratching or chewing.
3. Don’t forget about leash laws.
Don’t allow your dog to run free for the dog’s safety as well as the safety of others. Remember, not everyone likes dogs and some people are scared of dogs. No one likes a dog jumping on them. And you can’t pick up after your dog if she is running all over the place.
4. Cats make perfect apartment pets.
Cats are independent and don’t mind being left home alone all day or over night. You also won’t have to let a cat outside or walk it. Some landlords won’t allow any pets at all. It’s easy to sneak a cat into an apartment, but if you get caught you could be evicted or at least fined.
5. Small pets are usually allowed.
Fish, birds and reptiles usually aren’t a problem when renting. But double check just in case.
6. Assume you will pay a pet deposit no matter what kind of pet you own.
This will cover any damage your pet causes while you rent. The deposit is usually refundable.
